1.) Publisher's Note

Greetings, Maniacs! Here we are already almost halfway through 2003! Unbelieveable... Also unbelievable is how busy it's been this year. So busy that we have had to let this eZine suffer. For that we apologize.

To make it up to you, we have a special offer for you! As many of you know, we work closely with Doug Firebaugh. We have arranged with Doug to offer a special package to you today. Look for it in the Promotions section.

Our article this week is a continuation of our Skills vs. Will article. We have talked about it a lot and now will discuss some ideas and techniques that might help push you over the edge from inaction into action. This will be a series of articles in the coming weeks.

Coming up in July will see two new eBooks being offered from SuccessManiacs! First will be the archive of all eZines prior through 2002. This will be a FREE eBook!

Second will be a new eBook by Fric called "The Eleven Keys to Success". This eBook was previewed last year in one of our August issues. It's going to be really cool. Not only will we talk about each Key, but will suggest ways to actually IMPLEMENT them! No vacant, useless theory here! :) The eBook will be available in mid to late July and will cost only $20! What a deal!

2.) Recommended Resource - Nexera e-News

Go to the Nexera website and subscribe to Michael Clouse's e-News EZine. Michael has been involved in MLM and Self Development for quite a while. He's a former editor of the late Upline Magazine and a success in his own right. He has some of the best material we have seen in a long time anywhere. His site and articles covers tools to use, techniques to use and what to do and say. Check it out!

3.) Article - Moving From Inaction to Action Part One

Last time we talked about Skills vs. Will. The point we made was that no one and no thing can make you successful. No new technique will do it and no new idea will do it.

Why?

Because we still have to do the one thing that really is more important than anything else. What is it?

We have to ACT.

If you don't do the thing, the thing is useless. If you have been working on self-development for any length of time or listened to motivational tapes, you probably have learned all you need to know to create success in life. Jim Rohn has it. So does Zig Ziglar and Tony Robbins and countless others.

But are you where you desire to be?

No? Me either.

Why is that? In my case and probably in yours, it's because we don't use (or act upon) the things we KNOW will work.

So how do we do that Fric?

Good question! We are going to talk about a few things that will help spark you to action. I'll tell you right now that there is absolutely NO guarantee that any of these will work for you.

Why? Because, it's still up to you to do these things that will create the spark which in turn fans the flames of desire. If you don't take action of SOME kind, nothing I, or Rohn, Robbins, Ziglar, Brown, Firebaugh, etc., say or do will help.

In other words: If it is to be, it is up to me.

OK. Now that I have taken myself off the hook here, let's dive into it! :)

What makes people take action? That's motivation. Motivation can be defined here as "motive to act". So what moves us to act? The specific thing is something that varies from person to person. But generally you will either be moving toward something or away from something as Tony Robbins puts it. You will act out of fear of pain or because you seek pleasure.

Which is YOUR primary motivation? Do you act to avoid things like bill collectors, unemployment or arguments with your spouse? Or do you act to achieve goals and objectives, get a promotion, make more money or have better relationships?

No one will be locked into just one outlook, but one will probably be predominant over the other. That is your starting point. You have to examine what currently motivates you and also what has motivated you in the past.

In essence, we are looking for your triggers that will move you to action. If you are primarily acting to avoid pain, you may have to focus your efforts on changing what kinds of pain you are avoiding. If you are avoiding getting fired from your job for instance, you should reframe that into avoiding staying in the same dead-end slot in life that you are currently in.

It sounds like the opposite of what we have been taught doesn't it? But, you can't go from dealing with negatives as your motivation straight to positives. Doesn't work that way. Most people are avoiding pain in life, including those that are studying self-development. Traditional self-development tells you to accentuate the positive, use positive self-talk, etc. etc. That's great and eventually you will.

But when you are first starting to make changes in your life, I submit that doing so is self-defeating. You have been conditioned to avoid pain. You are very good at it as a matter of fact. You choose the pain to avoid and you do just enough to avoid it in most cases. If you do just enough to keep from getting fired, then you don't get fired. But you also don't get raises or promotions.

When conditioned to think and act in this way, the opposite is just not realistic. Your sub-conscious cannot get a handle on the idea. It's like taking a cat and trying to teach it to be friends with mice. It's just not conditioned for it. Instincts tell it to eat the mouse. Plus it just really ticks off the cat. :)

To begin to move from inaction to action, I suggest the following steps:

Examine what motivates you. Pain or pleasure? Avoidance or achievement

  1. Be honest here. We are tempted to say only pleasure and achievement, because that's how we desire to be. But is it true? Write down these things.
  2. Label them as pain or pleasure.
  3. Now order them from largest to smallest, largest being the one that drives you the most.
  4. Reframe each one into a more helpful statement like the getting fired scenario above. Change "Make enough money to pay the bills." to "Have an income of $X,000 per month."
  5. Now re-order the list into what order they SHOULD be for you. What things do you want to make a priority? Is it more important to focus on family, faith, job or recreation? You decide.
  6. Next, you must take the time to read this list EVERY day. You know the drill. It's just like all the goal setting materials tell you. Read in the morning. Read it in the evening. Read it every chance you get until you are comfortable with these new motivations.
  7. Finally, when you get to that point, you have to start all over. Restate them again in more positive and productive ways. The idea is to move your motivations from disempowering, negatives based on fear to empowering positives based on achievement.

You can't go from A to Z in one step. Take it in small steps and see what happens. Remember, YOU have to make the first step. What these steps do is give you an outline to take action. They don't work without you.

Heck, you may not even need to do these steps. Maybe you are beyond them. If so, great! But many people just aren't trained to be positively motivated. Hopefully, this will help change your mindset and get you thinking and doing things for better reasons.

Fric.

(Next time we will cover what to do once you have begun to change you motivations and started taking consistent actions.)
